Hosted by Light Gallery + Alison Broersma
Thursday, July 26th from 6 to 9pm
In this weaving workshop, Alison will teach you the basics of tapestry weaving using our plentiful variety of yarn and wool! You will learn beginner-level weaving skills such as how to warp a loom, weave with a needle, hand weave with thicker yarns, and how to make a decorative fringe.
To hone your new skills, you will work on completing a wall hanging, which measures 8" X 10" in size. Each wall hanging comes with a wooden dowel to insert across the top for easy hanging and beautiful wall display! Each student will leave with one finished wall hanging, a handout with a recap of the skills, terms, and resources discussed in class, and the skill to design and produce additional weaving projects at home! Looms will be available for purchase for $30 after the class has concluded if you are interested.
Supplies Needed: None. We have done all the legwork of sourcing the hard-to-find yarns, wool style yarns, and a simple 8x10 wooden loom.
Instructor Bio: At a young age Alison would make art with anything she could get her hands on. Her passion thrives from the her unique expression and outlet for creativity.
In Highschool, Alison dual enrolled at Kendall college of Art and Design, where she fell in love with art even more! She continued her art education at Grand Rapids Community College. After some soul searching and an economic recession, she settled on Non-Profit management. She later graduated from GVSU with her bachelors in 2016.
Outside of school she continued her love of the arts. In 2007, she taught art to homeschool kids at REV homeschool organization. She even curated a couple of my own art shows for local events around Grand Rapids.
Her love to encourage people to live through art and expression, is what drew us to her work. She states “There is no wrong way to enjoy art and I feel everyone can find their own personal talent. I am honored to have this opportunity to instruct and share the joy creativity brings to the soul.” In the immortal words of Bob Ross, “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents”.
