We recently talked to Alynn Guerra, Grand Rapids printmaker, about the recent flooding catastrophe at Tanglefoot, an old warehouse full of artist studios where Alynn has had her studio for many years. At the end of the polar vortex, a pipe burst above Alynn’s space, sending water cascading down into her space after what Alynn describes as a thundering sound above her. The resulting inches deep of water in her space caused damage to not just prints but shipping and framing materials, causing financial loss. We talk to Alynn about her plans for how the community can support her efforts to recover from the flooding, which include options starting at just a few dollars.
We also talk to Alynn about her work, and her regular themes of nature and skeletons, the themes in her work and her inspirations and approaches to making. We talk about where her ideas spring from and how she communicates about issues she cares about through her beautiful work.
To help recover from the flooding damage, Alynn is opening up her studio, now that it’s dry and cleaned up, to the public for an in-person sale. Many works that survived the flooding will be for sale, and prints will be able to be purchased starting at $1. For those unable to visit in person during the Flash Flood Sale on Friday, March 1st at her studio, a limited-time online sale will offer digital downloads of many of her works, on a donation basis.
